Southwest Conference Board of Directors
Brief description of duties:
The Board shall have the policy-making responsibilities for the work of Conference between meetings of the Conference. They shall establish criteria for and arrange for the conduct of an evaluation of each professional staff member; control and manage all property of the Conference; shall have the power to interpret the Conference Bylaws; and the power to amend the budget. Members must have a commitment to participate in Conference events and a willingness to help shape the direction of the mission/ministry of the Conference. Must be willing to be an interpreter of the work of the Conference in local congregations and associations. Each at-large member of the Board shall be a liaison between the Board and the member’s Association.
Meetings: The entire Board meets at least once a year in accordance with the bylaws of the Conference.
Staff support: the Conference Minister, the Office Manager
Organizational information:
Executive Committee: 13 persons - Moderator, Moderator-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, Committee on Church and Ministry (COCAM) chairperson, Nominating Committee chairperson, Personnel chairperson, 6 at-large members. The Executive Committee meets at such times as necessary at the call of the Conference Minister or the Moderator, usually 6 to 8 times per year.

Moderator and Moderator-elect: The Moderator is the chief elected officer of the Conference. This person works in regular consultation with the Conference Minister, must be able to conduct meetings efficiently, have a working knowledge of Conference organization, be sensitive to and aware of differing opinions, and be able to communicate effectively to interpret the work of the Board of Directors to the Annual Meeting and other settings. The Moderator should be wise, supportive of individual and group ministries, and express a positive attitude toward the wider church. The Moderator Elect is an ex-officio member of the Personnel Committee. The Moderator is an automatic representative to General Synod. Both are members of the Executive Committee of the Board. Term of office: 1 year in each position.
Secretary: The Secretary is legally responsible for the records of all Board proceedings of the Conference. This person must be able to make sense of discussions and to summarize effectively in writing. The Secretary works cooperatively with the Conference staff and other officers to accomplish their duties. The Secretary is a member of the Executive Committee and should be committed to attending all Board, Executive Committee, and Annual Meetings. Term of office: 2 years, maximum of 2 terms.
Treasurer: The Treasurer reviews all financial records and is responsible for reporting on income, expenditures, investments and other financial business to the Board and Annual Meeting. The Treasurer assists the Conference Minister and staff in developing and controlling the budget, has a working knowledge of accounting, and should be able to communicate effectively. A sense of Christian stewardship is important. The Treasurer is a member of the Executive Committee and Financial Oversight Committee. Term of office: 2 years, maximum of 2 terms.
Committee Representatives: 6 persons - In addition to the 3 standing committees (COCAM, Personnel, Nominating) chairpersons on the Executive Committee, the chairpersons from each of the following SWC committees are also members of the Board of Directors: Justice & Witness Ministries, Church Growth & Development Committee, Youth & Outdoor Ministry Committee.
At-large Members:A member of the Board must have a commitment to participate in Conference events, a calling to help shape the direction of Conference mission/ministry, and the wisdom and willingness to be an interpreter of the work of the Conference to local congregations. Six Members-at-Large (out of 15) will be asked to serve on the Executive Committee. Term of office: 3 years
National Representatives: SWC representatives to the national setting UCC ministries: Office of General Ministries, Executive Council, Local Church Ministries, Wider Church Ministries, Justice & Witness Ministries.
